- Single Sided Tapes

High-Performance Single Sided Tapes for Industrial, Commercial and DIY Applications

Single sided tapes offer a clean, efficient alternative to liquid adhesives and mechanical fasteners. These tapes apply quickly, bond consistently and deliver engineered performance across metals, plastics, composites, foams and paper-based substrates. They are ideal when you need controlled adhesion, high shear strength, or reliable long-term durability without adding bulk.

Why Choose Single Sided Tapes?

Single sided tapes provide adhesive on one face only. This allows you to bond, mount, seal, mask or protect surfaces without affecting the appearance of the exposed side. They are widely used in manufacturing, construction, automotive, electronics, packaging and general assembly because they create predictable, repeatable results.

Different adhesive chemistries are available to match your substrate and performance needs. Acrylic adhesives offer excellent UV resistance, solvent resistance, clarity and long-term durability. Rubber adhesives offer aggressive initial tack for bonding to low surface energy (LSE) materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Silicone adhesives provide outstanding high-temperature reliability, adhesion to silicone rubber and release characteristics where needed.

Engineers choose single sided tapes when they require:

• Strong bonding to high and low surface energy substrates
• Fast installation with no cure time
• Clean removal or residue-free masking (depending on product type)
• Reduced weight compared to screws, rivets or brackets
• Consistent thickness and mechanical performance
• Resistance to UV, chemicals, humidity and thermal cycling

iTapeStore also offers genuine 3M™ tapes with no minimum order quantities, allowing both industrial buyers and makers to purchase by the roll or by the yard.

Technical Specifications

Because single sided tapes vary widely in performance, it is important to select based on substrate type, adhesive chemistry, environment and load requirements.

Typical technical parameters to consider include:

Adhesive Type
• Acrylic: High shear strength, long-term durability, superior UV and solvent resistance
• Rubber: High tack, excellent adhesion to LSE plastics, lower temperature and solvent resistance
• Silicone: Bonds to silicone and fluoropolymers, broad temperature range

Temperature Range
Most acrylic tapes function from approximately -40°C to 120°C.
Rubber adhesives tend to operate in lower temperature ranges.
Silicone adhesives withstand elevated temperatures in demanding environments.

Substrate Compatibility
• HSE surfaces: Metals, polycarbonate, ABS, glass, sealed wood
• LSE surfaces: Polyethylene, polypropylene, powder-coated surfaces, foams
• Specialty: Silicone rubber, fluorosilicone, composites

Mechanical Characteristics
• Shear strength for vertical or static loads
• Tensile strength for pull forces
• Peel adhesion values to determine bond reliability
• Carrier/backing materials to provide stability, cushioning or barrier properties

Our technical team can help match the right tape to your silicone, polyolefin, composite or metal application.

Application Guide

To achieve maximum bond strength:

  1. Clean the substrate. Remove dust, oils and contaminants using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe.

  2. Dry and condition surfaces. Ideal application temperature is generally 15°C–38°C.

  3. Apply firm pressure. Pressure activates the adhesive and improves wet-out on the substrate.

  4. Allow dwell time. Many acrylic adhesives reach full strength after 24–72 hours as they flow into microscopic surface pores.

  5. Avoid repositioning. Once applied, lifting the tape can trap air or reduce bond area.

For challenging substrates such as powder coat or LSE plastics, surface primers may improve long-term performance.

FAQs

Are single sided tapes removable?

Some are. Acrylic tapes are often permanent, while certain rubber or specialty masking tapes offer clean removal. Check each product’s specification sheet.

Will these tapes bond to powder-coated surfaces?

Yes, but adhesion varies. Acrylic adhesives generally perform well. Primers or surface abrasion can improve wet-out on textured powder coat.

Can I use these tapes outdoors?

Acrylic-based single sided tapes offer excellent UV and weather resistance. Rubber adhesives are best kept indoors unless rated otherwise.

Are there minimum order quantities?

No. You can buy by the roll, by the yard or request custom-cut parts with no minimums.
