Their heaviest consumer option, which is the 20 lb picture hanging strips, can support gallery-sized frames on smooth painted drywall, which covers almost all residential needs.

Where to use command hook clips

Indoors, on smooth surfaces: Painted drywall, finished wood, ceramic tile, glass, metal doors, laminate, varnished cabinets. Standard Command clips and hooks work best at room temperature on clean, dry surfaces with nothing between the strip and the wall.

Outdoors, with the right product: 3M™ offers a separate outdoor lineup such as outdoor light clips, stainless steel wire hooks, and terrace hooks. These are built for rain, moisture, and UV exposure. These use a different adhesive strip rated for vinyl siding, PVC trim, and aluminum gutters. Indoor hooks placed outside will not hold up for long, typically failing around the first rainstorm.

Surfaces that won't work: Brick, stucco, cinder block, textured paint, wallpaper, bare drywall, and anything painted within 7 days. Command strips bond through total contact, so any texture that prevents the strip from lying flat weakens hold strength until the product becomes unreliable.

For curtain rods, Command offers dedicated curtain rod hook holders in matte black, brushed nickel, and oil-rubbed bronze. These hold rods up to 5/8 inch in diameter with a 10 lb per-mount rating which is plenty for lightweight panels on a standard window, but not enough for heavy blackout drapes or extra-wide spans.

How to apply and remove command hook clips

Applying them properly:

Clean the spot with isopropyl alcohol first. Skip household cleaners and multi-surface wipes as they leave a film that weakens adhesion. Peel off the red liner from the strip, press it onto the hook's backing plate, then peel off the other liner and push the whole assembly against the wall for a solid 30 seconds. Let it sit for an hour after that. That hour lets the adhesive build full bond strength, and loading it early is the most common reason people claim these products fail.

Removing without wall damage:

Hold the base flat with one hand and bring the stretch-release tab straight down, slowly and steadily, parallel to the wall surface. Pull down, not out. Pulling outward applies peel force and tears paint off. Pulling downward stretches the strip to its release point, leaving the wall clean and undamaged.

If the tab snapped or you lost it, hold a hair dryer on the lowest setting against the base for about 30 seconds to warm the adhesive. Then slide dental floss behind the plate to cut through the bond. Strange, but it works.
