What are laminating sheets for bonding?
Industrial laminating sheets are self-adhesive films which permanently adhere to whatever surface you apply them to. This is not comparable to anything that a simple desktop laminator can achieve.
Adhesive-backed laminating sheets use pressure-sensitive adhesive. No heat is required and no laminator machine is involved in this process. Simply peel the release liner, position the film, and press it into place. The bond forms on contact.
Our 3M Lexan polycarbonate laminating sheets are our primary product. It is also important to note that Lexan polycarbonate has become a staple in aerospace and electronics manufacturing for a variety of reasons including:
- Impact resistance without any tendency to crack
- Long-term optical clarity

The adhesive backing allows you to apply them directly to flat or slightly curved surfaces without producing any bubbling, wrinkling, or peeling at the edges.
Types of laminating sheets
Selecting the right laminating sheet depends on what surface it needs to stick to and the elements around it:
- Self-adhesive vs. thermal: Everything in this category is self-adhesive, peel-and-stick with no heat activation. Thermal laminating pouches which are the consumer grade sheets you can buy at Walmart and Target, need a heated laminator. These are different products with different uses, but both are referred to as "laminating sheets."
- Polycarbonate vs. polyester: Polycarbonate films like Lexan absorb impacts and flex without becoming brittle. Polyester tends to be slightly thinner, less costly, and sufficient for lighter-duty work such as indoor signage. But if the laminated surface will continually get knocked, scratched, or handled roughly, polycarbonate is the way to go.
- Thickness ratings in mil: One mil equals one-thousandth of an inch. A 5 mil laminating sheet measures 0.005 inches which is roughly 40% thicker than a 3 mil sheet and noticeably more rigid between your fingers. Thicker sheets resist punctures and mechanical damage while thinner sheets conform more easily to contoured surfaces.
- Single-sided adhesive is standard for the sheets we stock. The adhesive sits on one face, the protective film faces outward. Double-sided adhesive laminating sheets do exist for bonding between two substrates, but that is a more specialized application.

How to choose the right laminating sheets
When it comes to selecting the right laminating sheets, ask yourself four questions:
- What surface are you bonding to? Flat, smooth surfaces bond well with standard pressure-sensitive adhesive. If the surface has texture or curvature, you may need a thinner, more conformable film or an adhesive formulated for rough bonding.
- What conditions will it endure? Outdoor installations need UV-stable materials. Factory floors need impact resistance. A temperature-controlled office is the easiest environment and any laminating sheet will perform there.
- Permanent or removable? Our default bonding products use permanent adhesive. Removable-adhesive options sacrifice holding strength for clean removal later. Know which you need before ordering.
- Which thickness? Below 5 mil, films stay pliable and drape over mild contours. Above 5 mil, rigidity increases and so does puncture resistance. Pick the thickness that matches the abuse your application dishes out — there is no "best" without context.

What is the difference between laminating sheets and film?
Sheets are pre-cut to specific sizes. Film usually comes on a roll for continuous-feed lamination machines. Our sheets are pressure-sensitive.
Can I use laminating sheets without a laminator?

Which is thicker, 3 mil or 5 mil?
5 mil. One mil is 0.001 inches, so 5 mil (0.005") is about two-thirds thicker than 3 mil (0.003"). In practice, 5 mil sheets feel stiffer and resist punctures and creasing more effectively. Choose 3 mil when flexibility and conformability matter more than rigidity.
