One of the primary advantages VELCRO® Brand hook and loop has over traditional zip ties is reusability. VELCRO® Brand cable management straps open, re-route, add an extra cable, and close again all in a few seconds. No cutting and no replacing necessary.
Types of Cable Management Straps
ONE-WRAP® Straps account for most of what we sell in cable management. The hook side grabs the loop side when you wrap it around a bundle, so there is no buckle and no separate fastener. We stock pre-cut lengths from 6 inches to 12 inches, as well as rolls that run 25 yards. Widths range from 1/2 inch up through 6 inches. A fiber optic-rated ONE-WRAP® is also available, and is engineered for low-compression bundling, which is important when you are running single-mode fiber.
For contractors managing larger cable installations, QWIK TIES® are the go-to option. They are packaged in rolls of pre-cut strips and the 3/4-inch-by-12-inch roll provides you with 75 ties. For bigger jobs, the 25-yard continuous rolls allow you to cut the exact length a run demands.
When heavier cable runs require securing, RAPID-STRAP® Kits are designed for the job. They come with a built-in buckle and are available in 1-inch and 2-inch widths. They are built for heavier work like thick power cables, coaxial runs, and bundled conduit.
Not all cable bundles stay perfectly uniform, which is where VELSTRAP® Straps come in. Their elastic build allows the strap to flex around uneven or changing bundle sizes while maintaining tension without placing excessive pressure on the cables below,
THIN TIES at 1/2 inch by 8 inches are mostly used for smaller, everyday cable management tasks. This includes cable management for desk chargers, headphone cables, or an Ethernet run behind a monitor. Some things just do not warrant a full-width strap.
Where Cable Management Straps Get Used
Once you begin your search for cable management straps, you will be surprised at how often these management tools make an appearance:
Data centers and server rooms order ONE-WRAP® rolls. Technicians cut precise lengths for each cable run, and the fiber optic version avoids micro-bending on sensitive lines. Home offices fill up with USB cables, monitors, docking stations, and phone chargers at an alarming rate. THIN TIES and pre-cut ONE-WRAP® straps handle the chaos.Behind a TV mount, 3/4-inch or 1-inch straps group HDMI, speaker wire, and power cords into one clean run. Industrial buildings and electrical panels call for RAPID-STRAP® kits, where the built-in buckle handles heavier gauge wire without the permanence of a nylon tie. And touring AV crews burn through QWIK TIES® in bulk, strap, strike, restrap, night after night, and the ties hold up.
Choosing the Right Cable Strap
Match the strap width to the bundle diameter. Small clusters of three to five thin cables? 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch straps are plenty. Ten or more cables, or anything involving power cords, need 1-inch or wider. Thick conduit or hose alongside cable calls for the 2-inch RAPID-STRAP® or a wide ONE-WRAP® roll.
Then determine whether you want pre-cut or roll stock. Pre-cut is grab-and-go. Rolls cost less per strap on large jobs and let you cut to the exact length. A 25-yard roll of 3/4-inch ONE-WRAP® produces over 100 six-inch straps if that is all you need.
One thing to be deliberate about: fiber optic cable always gets the dedicated ONE-WRAP® for Fiber Optic Cables line. Standard straps apply enough squeeze to introduce measurable signal loss on single-mode runs. It is not something you want to discover after the rack is dressed.
VELCRO® Brand Straps vs. Zip Ties
Zip ties cinch tight and stay there permanently. For fixed installations this is perfect but in any environment where cables get added, swapped, or rerouted, reusable hook and loop straps are faster and more economical.
There is a cable health argument as well. VELCRO® Brand straps distribute pressure across the full width of the strap, so they do not create the pinch points that nylon zip ties produce when someone ratchets them one click too tight. Those pinch points deform cable jackets and can increase crosstalk on network runs, the kind of problem that takes hours to diagnose and thirty seconds to prevent.
iTapeStore sells VELCRO® Brand products by the yard, roll, or pre-cut strip. Custom-cut parts are available. You order what a project needs, not what a case pack dictates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are VELCRO® Brand straps good for cable management?
They are the go-to for any installation where someone will need to open the bundle later. Hook and loop straps reseal without tools, do not damage cable jackets, and last through hundreds of wrap cycles. For permanent outdoor runs or high-temperature environments, nylon or stainless steel ties may be a better fit.
How do you use VELCRO® Brand straps for cable management?
Gather the cables. Wrap the strap around the bundle with the hook side facing outward to minimize the hook material from picking up lint and debris. Thread the tail through the slot on ONE-WRAP® ties, or fold it back on itself for straps without a slot. Tighten until snug but not strangling. The strap holds itself in place.
Are cable ties good for cable management?
Standard nylon ties are fine when the installation is permanent and nothing will change. For offices, data centers, home setups, anywhere cables get added or moved, reusable VELCRO® Brand straps make more sense because you can reopen and resecure without cutting.
What is the best way to organize cables?
Route first, strap second. Group cables by destination or function. Place a strap every 12 to 18 inches along a horizontal run to keep things from sagging. Label both ends of every bundle. And start with the right width strap for the job, too narrow and the bundle slips, too wide and it looks like overkill.
