Medium strips: Up to 12 lbs per pair, which covers frames up to 18" x 24". The majority of standard photo frames fall somewhere in this range, so these tend to be the default choice for people unsure of what size to use.

Large strips: Up to 16 lbs per pair for frames up to 24" x 36". Gallery-quality prints, framed posters, the type of wall art that actually has some weight to it. The most popular size we sell.

X-Large strips: Up to 20 lbs per pair. Heavy mirrors, canvas, oversized frames. Same frame size limit as the large strips (24" x 36") but made for denser objects.

Narrow strips: Up to 6 lbs per pair. Designed for thin-profile frames where a normal strip would protrude over the edge. Only an aesthetic consideration; if you're okay with the strip being visible from the side, a medium or large will support more weight.

You can also double up. Two pairs of large strips on one frame gives you 32 lbs of rated capacity, although 3M™ recommends using the single-pair rating when possible.

How to use Command picture hanging strips

The majority of failed strips come down to skipping surface preparation or not waiting long enough for the adhesive to set. The actual application takes only a couple of minutes:

1. Clean the wall with rubbing alcohol. Specifically rubbing alcohol as household cleaners and water leave residues that interfere with the bond.
2. Click the strip pairs together. You'll hear an audible snap as they lock into place. If you don't hear it, pull apart and try again.
3. Peel one liner off and stick the strips to the back of the frame. Top two corners, plus two more halfway down each side if the frame is larger.
4. Remove the second liner and press the entire frame against the wall.
5. Here's where most people go wrong: pull the frame back off the wall, then press each individual strip flat against the wall for a full 30 seconds. That extra pressure is what activates the adhesive bond. Don't skip this step.
6. Set a timer for 60 minutes. Don't rush this. Rehang the frame once the hour is up.

A couple of things to confirm before you begin: if the wall was painted recently, wait at least a week. The strips will not adhere to paper-backed frames - you need a hard, smooth frame surface. And take off any existing sawtooth hangers or wire hardware before you apply.

Where Command strips work (and where they don't)

The adhesive grips painted drywall, finished wood, glass, tile, metal, laminate, and painted concrete. Anything smooth and sealed within a reasonable temperature range (50-105°F).

What doesn't work: textured walls, wallpaper, bare brick, any unfinished surface, and fabric. If running your hand down the wall leaves you feeling bumps or grain, then Command strips are unlikely to be the right fit. 3M™ is also quite specific about not hanging anything over a bed, which makes sense once you think about a frame falling at 2 AM.

For bathrooms or garages where moisture is constant, use the humidity-rated version. Standard strips will hold for a while in damp conditions, but the bond weakens over several months.
