Types of command poster strips available
Command poster strips are not one size fits all.
Below are the types of command poster strips available:
Small poster strips are good for lightweight, unframed posters, schedules, calendars, and children's artwork. Each pair can support up to 1 lb. Two to four pairs on the top edge of an 8x10 poster will keep it flat against a wall for months at a time.
Medium poster strips are more appropriate for slightly heavier objects such as laminated signs, heavy card stock, and mounted prints. If whatever you are hanging up is stiffer than a sheet of paper but not as bulky as a picture frame, these are the type for the job.
Large strips are better for larger posters and banners that require more adhesive area across the back.

How to use command poster strips
This whole process takes about 2 minutes, follow the 3M™ directions below:
- Clean the wall with rubbing alcohol and let it dry. Not Windex, not a damp cloth, just rubbing alcohol. Household cleaners leave a film that weakens the adhesive bond.
- Remove the red liner on one side and press firmly onto the back of your poster, near the corners.
- Remove the black liner, position on the wall, and press hard for 30 seconds. Actually count to thirty. People rush this.
- Walk away and do not touch for an hour. The adhesive needs that time to reach its full bond strength.
Rules that people skip and then regret:
- Freshly painted walls need 7 full days before you apply anything adhesive. The paint has to cure.
- Never hang items over beds. If a strip lets go at 2 a.m., a poster falling on your face is annoying; a framed print falling on a sleeping child is dangerous.
- Indoor use only, between 50°F and 105°F.
- The strip goes on the back of the poster. Sticking adhesive to the front of a poster will tear the ink off when you remove it.
What surfaces work with command poster strips?
These strips need a smooth, finished surface to make proper contact. They work well on painted drywall (the vast majority of use), finished wood paneling, glass and mirrors, ceramic tile, metal doors and lockers, and flat ceilings.
Where they do not work: textured drywall (orange-peel or knockdown textures), wallpaper, brick, raw concrete, any rough surface, or anything with a non-stick coating. The adhesive needs to lay flat against the surface. Command makes other product lines with different adhesive formulations for textured surfaces, but the poster strip line specifically requires smoothness.
Removing command poster strips without wall damage
Grab the bottom corners of the poster and peel it slowly away from the wall at a downward angle. Do not yank straight outward. Pulling perpendicular to the wall stresses the paint.
Once you have the poster off, find the stretch-release tab at the bottom of each strip. Pull that tab firmly downward, keeping the strip close to the wall, until you have stretched it at least 15 inches. The strip comes away from the wall and the paint stays in place.
Sometimes the tab breaks. If that happens, slide a credit card or a thin putty knife flat against the wall and work its edge beneath the strip. Do not pry outward as you will crack the paint.
Command poster strips vs picture hanging strips
There is a lot of confusion between these two products, and using the wrong one will have your posters on the floor.
Poster strips use a basic foam adhesive pad: one side sticks to the poster, the other to the wall. They work for lightweight, unframed items such as paper posters, vinyl banners, printed signs, and calendars. About 4 lb can be supported, and 3M™ lists them for items up to 8x10 inches.
Picture hanging strips work differently. They use an interlocking click-lock mechanism where two halves snap together, spreading the weight across a wider surface. Large picture hanging strips hold up to 16 lb per set; extra-large ones go to 20 lb. These are what you want for framed photos, canvases, and small mirrors.

Do command poster strips damage posters?
Not if you apply them correctly. The adhesive bonds to the wall, not the poster face. Place the strips on the back of the poster near the edges. If you accidentally apply one to the printed side, pulling it off will either tear the paper or pull the ink, so check before pressing down.
How much weight can command poster strips hold?
A pair of small poster strips can hold up to 1 lb. To support heavier or larger posters, use several pairs. 3M™ recommends spacing them along the top edge and halfway down each side.
