What are hot melt adhesives?
Hot melt adhesive, also often referred to as hot glue or HMA, is a thermoplastic polymer that comes as a solid stick or pellet. It is heated to a temperature above its softening point (roughly 250°F to 400°F depending on formulation) to become tacky and liquid. It can be applied with a gun, roller or an automatic dispensing head.Once the adhesive touches the surface and begins cooling, the bond quickly becomes stronger. In most cases, it becomes strong enough to handle the bonded item within seconds.
The real practical advantage is not just in its efficiency, but in what it produces. Hot melts contain no water or solvents, so this means the product does not give off any VOCs as you work. They barely shrink at all. Now think of a water-based adhesive which may lose more than half its weight as the water evaporates away, leaving behind a thinner, weaker glue line. Types of hot melt adhesive

- Polyamide formulations can withstand temperatures that would turn an EVA bond into a soft, stringy mess. Electronics enclosures, under-hood automotive brackets and LED light assemblies are typical polyamide applications.
- Metallocene is a polyethylene-based adhesive that flows cleanly through high-speed systems with no char and negligible odor. If your operation eats pallets of adhesive and can't afford to shut down mid-shift for a tank cleaning, metallocene will surely be part of your specifications.
